Encampment Care

Overview

Complex issues call for collaborative action. REACH Niagara partners with several local organizations to bring primary care, counselling, and other essential services directly to homeless encampments. A group of allied healthcare and social service professionals meet people where they live to ensure that no member of Niagara is left without care.

Who is the program for?

Accessing care of our encampment care team is easy. Our team tracks and visits encampments to ensure care is provided to those in need. Due to the transient nature of many of these gatherings it is not always possible to have routine visits.

What are the benefits?

Access to regular hygiene and safe drinking water means that simple wounds can develop into serious medical events. Encampment care helps divert patients from local emergency departments through preventative care. Our goal is to build trust with our clients to help them come to our regularly scheduled mobile and indoor clinics to receive better, more regular care and support.  Other benefits include:

  • Wound care is important for those who do not have access to running water.
  • Oftentimes people risk having their possessions stolen making leaving encampments a choice between receiving care or potentially losing their home.
  • Finding primary care when they do not have a fixed address, identification and transportation. Oftentimes encampment care teams are people’s only opportunity to access healthcare.
